Introduction to Research

What is research?  investigation into a subject or circumstance.  Learn something new, or see something in a new light!

Why do research?

  • Discern gossip from truth.
  • Provide facts in support of an argument.
  • Need a good grade - research paper required for a class!
  • Prove an understanding of a topic.
  • Discover new information.
  • Verify or revise existing facts, theories, applications.

Why do you need sources for your paper?

  • In virtually every paper you write as a college student, you will need to find sources to support your argument, your point of view, or as the background/starting point for your individual research.
  • You need these sources to prove to your reader that you understand your topic, to provide a factual basis for what you are arguing in your paper, and/or to add credibility to your research.
  • Writing about your opinion, your beliefs, or about something you “just know” without providing sources to back up your stance is not usually sufficient in academic writing.
  • Typically, a goal in academic writing is that you learn something new or look at things in a new way. That goal can’t be met if you only talk about what you already think you know.

Why do you need to evaluate these sources?

  • Your paper is only as credible as your sources.
