About Copyright

Copyright is a form of intellectual property. It is a legal provision that that grants the author/creator of a work exclusive rights to that work, typically for a limited amount of time. Very generally speaking, in the United States, copyright protection begins at the moment the work becomes fixed in a tangible format, whether or not the work is published.

Works that are typically protected by copyright include:

  • Literary works (novels, poems, essays, articles, etc.)
  • Dramatic works (plays, movies, television series, etc.)
  • Art (architecture, drawings, sculpture, photographs, etc.)
  • Music
  • Computer software

In the United States, there are also legal provisions that allow for use of copyrighted material in certain circumstances and for limited purposes. In this way, copyright both encourages the creation of new works by granting the creator exclusive rights and the benefits that come with those (such as monetary gain), while also allowing others to build upon or learn from that work.
